<preston17> 😄️
[07:39:54]
<preston17> How can I download this for desktop?
[07:40:03]
<preston17> Does anybody know?
[07:40:54]
<preston17> I downloaded Dino but it's not very functional here from desktop
[07:58:44]
<just_a_rock> Which client are you asking about? Some just don't have desktop versions.
[08:01:21]
<preston17> It's for myself and others in general
[08:02:49]
<preston17> Mac, Windows, Linux users. So they can come on here via their desktop and also do text, audio, and video messages.
[08:09:23]
<preston17> Does anyone have a link to an AstraChat downloader?
[08:17:06]
<just_a_rock> AstraChat also has a downloads page for various operating systems.
https://astrachat.com/download.aspx
[08:17:06]
<just_a_rock> The official XMPP website has a page about AstraChat.
https://xmpp.org/software/astrachat-xmpp-client/
[08:18:45]
<preston17> Yes, but I don't have a work email so I can't get the download link sent to me unfortunately
[08:18:52]
<just_a_rock> But if you're on Linux it may be better to install through your package manager instead of from a download button in the website. I don't see it in any apt or flatpak repositories I have in my list, but it may be in others.
[08:19:05]
<just_a_rock> Oh weird
[08:19:53]
<preston17> https://share.conversations.im/preston17/yV4II9qVUsJ0Et0u/RZ487TZTSRmn3UkmhkZuHg.jpg
[08:20:06]
<preston17> Anyways I found a download link
[08:20:17]
<just_a_rock> Try your personal email address anyway I guess, or use a temporary one. It's really weird that they would require that.
[08:20:21]
<preston17> But not sure how to connect through to here?
[08:21:06]
<just_a_rock> Your hostname should be the domain name of whatever XMPP server your account is on & your port should be the port number.
[08:21:33]
<preston17> https://share.conversations.im/preston17/NTcGV1QGaBIz9xej/iIFEBnQpTXCGGufzKKyNtg.jpg
[08:21:45]
<preston17> Still not working with personal email
[08:21:49]
<just_a_rock> I'm on Matrix over the Matrix bridge in this room, so I can't see your actual XMPP address so I won't be able to tell you what your domain is.
[08:22:00]
<just_a_rock> > <preston17> sent an image.
You need to put in hostname & port
[08:22:16]
<preston17> Thanks, how do I find my domain?
[08:22:24]
<just_a_rock> Do you remember where you signed up for XMPP? What's your XMPP address?
[08:22:36]
<just_a_rock> It should be the same domain as what's in your address.
[08:22:48]
<just_a_rock> Pretty much the same as how an email address works.
[08:22:58]
<preston17> I just downloaded the Conversations app from f-droid and got started
[08:23:36]
<just_a_rock> Ok, so you probably signed up with the default server in Conversations. What's your XMPP address?
[08:24:06]
<preston17> preston@conversations.im
[08:24:14]
<preston17> preston17@conversations.im
[08:24:32]
<just_a_rock> Ok, your hostname is conversations.im, because that's what server your account is located on.
[08:24:55]
<just_a_rock> Try putting that in. I'm not sure what port it uses but it might work with leaving the port field blank.
[08:25:43]
<preston17> https://share.conversations.im/preston17/vP9aZeX7KZ0covgv/ixZ3XzOfQXSns338VK0mCg.jpg
[08:25:46]
<preston17> Unfortunately doesn't work
[08:25:55]
<preston17> Maybe I should change the username?
[08:26:10]
<just_a_rock> Click "autodiscover" & then try again.
[08:26:42]
<just_a_rock> That's might make AstraChat ask conversations.im for the correct port automatically.
[08:27:42]
<preston17> Unfortunately autodiscover didn't work
[08:27:42]
<preston17> https://share.conversations.im/preston17/eS0Y0LPuyRVOmKKL/_tKAmnopTEap7Br3nrDHPw.jpg
[08:28:00]
<just_a_rock> It wouldn't let you check the box next to it?
[08:29:05]
<preston17> It did
[08:29:29]
<preston17> https://share.conversations.im/preston17/79RfbtlycFqbufp7/0-P39PGLRKG9dxxYy8oAXw.jpg
[08:29:46]
<just_a_rock> Try logging in with that.
[08:29:54]
<preston17> Host and DNS look up fails
[08:30:09]
<just_a_rock> Try port 5222
[08:30:31]
<just_a_rock> Or 5223.
[08:30:37]
<just_a_rock> Either might work
[08:30:57]
<preston17> https://share.conversations.im/preston17/45jwKbc1vAAB3Ffg/VXmj4LGBTNqsv6XgULEqnA.jpg
[08:31:07]
<preston17> Should I also tick SSL?
[08:31:54]
<just_a_rock> If it doesn't work, try with 5223 & SSL enabled. XMPP uses port 5222 for no SSL & 5223 for with SSL.
[08:32:27]
<just_a_rock> conversations.im doesn't seem to specify which port it uses on its website, so hopefully it's the default.
[08:32:40]
<preston17> Unfortunately both don't work
[08:33:18]
<just_a_rock> Weird
[08:34:19]
<just_a_rock> I have no idea. Maybe sniff TCP packets from the Conversations app on your phone & see if it lists a port anywhere. I'm out of ideas. Conversations.im sold have the port on their website but it doesn't seem like they do.
[08:34:40]
<preston17> Ok thanks
[08:35:08]
<just_a_rock> They have a MUC for support though.
https://conversations.im/#support
[08:35:15]
<just_a_rock> xmpp:conversations@conference.siacs.eu?join
[08:35:32]
<just_a_rock> They might know more.
[08:35:34]
<preston17> Ok, great
[09:07:47]
<preston17> I have accessed this chat through Dino on desktop
[09:08:13]
<preston17> It doesn't have the same function of audio and video recording or calls?
[09:26:42]
<preston17> https://share.conversations.im/preston17/jNKSi8VVHc5drttu/VID-20221208-WA0005.mp4
[09:27:14]
<preston17> Please disregard
[09:32:09]
<preston17> I was just testing the file share facility
[10:10:28]
<just_a_rock> Not all clients will have the same features. I'm pretty sure calls aren't really part of XMPP & are done through some other protocol. I don't know much about XMPP though.
