Hey
[01:46:32] <waseem> > hi
👋
[04:36:07] <aisen> 你好
[10:15:56] <kendy> > New post in Matrix.org: This Week in Matrix 2025-10-31 (https://matrix.org/blog/2025/10/31/this-week-in-matrix-2025-10-31/)
is matrix even good
[10:16:01] <kendy> ive tried it once but it felt so janky
[10:16:08] <kendy> compared to irc and xmpp
[10:45:09] <wizzy> > > New post in Matrix.org: This Week in Matrix 2025-10-31 (https://matrix.org/blog/2025/10/31/this-week-in-matrix-2025-10-31/)

i tried it, jank is real, it uses more resources, the only thing i liked was i could put multiple rooms into a category & users could join whichever rooms they wanted instead of needing to be invited or find them all individually
[10:45:39] <wizzy> xmpp is just simpler & doesnt try to be flashy, it does what it says it does
[11:39:10] <onkelschnitzel> > xmpp is just simpler & doesnt try to be flashy, it does what it says it does
Always coming back to that conclusion too. Best of all.
[14:53:49] <kendy> yeah , i think matrix tries too hard to be a discord replacement
[14:54:12] <kendy> when people who want to use discord will use discord ,, not matrix
[14:59:57] <Testiclides> I see a lot of people saying that, but I just dont see it. matrix is a message first application, and doesnt have voice call channels openly available for people to join, at least as far as I know. the latter is one of the flagship features of discord for me
[15:00:42] <Testiclides> I do see matrix as a replacement for IRC though, despite all of its shortcomings
[15:01:49] <Testiclides> and XMPP as well, although matrix's shortcomings have in a way made a great argument for XMPP
[15:29:27] <PG弥> 👁️ 👁️
👅
[20:13:34] <wizzy> after thinking back on it, the likely biggest reason i didnt like matrix was because its not easy for new users to figure out, i was new to federated platforms & i just went with matrix.org on the matrix client. didnt know how to find other servers so i went with the easiest, sadly many others do the same & matrix.org has become 90% of the matrix network so its practically another walled garden platform like discord, no variety to choose from if i didnt like the main server on the main client, everything was by their rules
[20:33:38] <Testiclides> the concept of decentralization is a hard one to understand at first, but its cool. I dont think apps should suggest matrix.org by default, they should provide at least a list of curated servers.

that being said, despite matrix.org being the largest server, it went down for a full day 2 months ago and I didnt really feel like it being down had that much of an impact on the network's activity
[20:34:22] <Testiclides> also, technically xmpp has the same potential issue with centralization, arent there way too big servers out there as well?
[20:36:20] <wizzy> i think so, i tried making accounts on others but they either werent allowing new accounts or there were technical issues preventing me from registering so i gave up & went with xmpp.earth
[20:37:39] <wizzy> but ive had an easier time finding more people on other servers, i stopped using matrix years ago so it seemed pretty dead outside matrix.org, maybe the network has grown since then but i wasnt there 2 months ago to see what it was like
[20:39:42] <wizzy> for me almost everyone used matrix.org, except poa.st having an offshoot from their other fediverse server & i think louis rossmann had a server too
[20:41:04] <Testiclides> matrix is alright. its not as active as discord for example, but its still a place in which I find some cool rooms, topics and people
[20:41:45] <Testiclides> and I do see a lot of people on non matrix.org servers. but my image of matrix is also fairly recent. its only been a little over a year since I started using it
[20:41:58] <Testiclides> its been around for 10 years now after all
